Breakfast in America

Whether you wake up craving a fluffy short stack drizzled with maple syrup, or a spicy huevos ranchero, you can get well fed in North Dallas

Whether you wake up craving a fluffy short stack drizzled with maple syrup, or a spicy huevos ranchero, you can get well fed in North Dallas

(Well, the Metroplex anyway.)

D Magazine’s cover story this month is “The 20 Best Breakfasts in Dallas.” They do hit a few places north… McKinney, Plano.

But we noticed that no Frisco or West Plano joints made the list, so we thought we’d add our own faves in, just in case some of you can’t imagine driving south of George Bush just to eat eggs.

Our regular breakfast haunt is locally-owned 5th Street Patio Cafe (mentioned previously). The Captain Crunch French toast, Cajun crawfish scramble, chorizo breakfast tacos, and traditional egg and pancake platters are all excellent. Their applewood-smoked bacon is worth ordering all by itself.

And they turn tables quickly thanks to the seat-yourself, beverage-yourself set-up; when the wait at other local egg joints is going to literally be out the door and around the corner, we know that 5th Street will get us in and out quick.

The breakfast menu at Le Peep (Preston and Stonebrook) is legendary. Their omelets are especially good, as well as their light options featuring egg white, fruit and other healthy picks.

And the so-north-Plano-it-might-as-well-be-Frisco outpost of The Original Pancake House is also worth the wait. Strong coffee, fresh-squeezed OJ, and super-friendly service will accompany their signature pancakes and crepes.

Savvy secret: you can call ahead to the OPH at (972) 712-2121, and ask to be put on the waiting list before you arrive. This will turn a 45-minute wait on the sidewalk with hungry kiddos to a much more manageable 10-minute delay. (Goodness knows that when you’re ready for some brekkie, it’s criminal to have to wait longer than that!)

Now you’re armed and ready for a great breakfast on the last weekend of summer.

(You’ll notice that we didn’t touch on brunch, that oh-so-important weekend meal. That’s its own whole feature for another time)

And there is always the original ‘II Brothers’ on Main & Preston representing the good ol’ greasy spoon concept. Breakfast is by far the best meal there!

Jennifer… of COURSE! How could we forget II Brothers? Their monster burritos are lengendary. I love their diner-style breakfast. We’ll have to do a full feature on them soon.
