We know. Don’t panic. We’re here for you.
Well, more specifically, the awesome guys at the Apple Store at Stonebriar Centre are here for you. Did you know they offer free user workshops on the iPad, iPhone and Mac laptops?
The Apple folks are a treasure trove of information. Here are some of the cool things we learned just in a few minutes while waiting for a certain Savvy teen to receive her replacement phone (thank you, warranty!):
• Killer app: Trapster: It alerts you to nearby police speed traps and radar guns, based on your GPS. You can also report in about speed traps that you see, and help out fellow drivers. Trapster even tells you the location of the nearest Starbucks. Cost: FREE.
Can you imagine going on a summer road trip without this app? We can’t.
• Killer app: Remote: Control the music on your iTunes library with your iPhone from anywhere in the house or office. How handy would this be when you’re lounging by the pool, and suddenly the shuffle hits you with Kenny G, completely killing the Lady Gaga party vibe?
Instead of getting up, drying off, and finding your flip-flops so you can go inside to the computer; just grab your phone and correct the situation. Cost: FREE.
• Killer trick: Attach multiple photos to one email, rather than sending them one at a time (like I’ve you’ve been doing).
- Go to Camera. Tap icon in bottom left.
- Enter Camera Roll (where you can see all your photos in a gallery of thumbnails).
- Tap the “email this” button in the bottom left.
- Select up to 5 photos; you will see them checked off after selection.
- Tap “Share.” Select email or MMS.
Now, Grandma doesn’t have to get every cute baby pic in an individual email; she can get them 5 at a time.
• Killer trick: Take a screenshot of your iPhone. This is especially helpful when you need to prove for posterity that you actually did score 137 points on one play in Words With Friends one time, by playing BAROQUE across the top row, clearing the rack and also hitting 2 TLs and a TW.*
Or, um, more grownup things like demonstrating very useful iPhone tricks. And it’s super-easy: just push the home button and power-off button simultaneously. You’ll see the screen flash, and then the screenshot will appear in your Camera Roll.
Now, if these are the cool things we picked up in just 10 minutes, imagine how much you can learn if you attended a full workshop. Learning the tips that make your technology work better can save you time and money and speeding tickets.
Also consider: these Apple Store workshops would be a great hour of entertainment for the iPerson who doesn’t particularly care to tag along to the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Shoe Sale. He can take his iPhone to the Apple Store and learn freely, while you browse freely.
Or if you happen to be a two-iPad household, you can have a date at the Apple Store.
Which would only be the fourth nerdiest thing we’d ever heard.
*This would be the third.
