Burrito Magic
But finally, word got out and other college towns clamored for some of that burrito goodness. Then the clever kids at Freebirds figured out that not just poor and/or hungover college students want a tasty, fast meal made with fresh ingredients and grilled meats.
And lo, the suburbs rejoiced! Freebirds opened yesterday on Preston at Headquarters just south of 121.
The top menu item is the burrito, obvs, which comes in four sizes: Hybrid, Freebird, Monster and Super Monster. (I have never known anyone to eat a Super Monster in one sitting. We’re talking pounds of food.)You can choose from four flavors of tortilla, and fill it with your choice of grilled chicken, steak, carnitas or go veggie. Beans, rice, sour cream, cheeses, fresh veggies, salsa, pico all can be added for your perfect burrito. You can even top it with queso (nom nom nom!).
I hate to say it this way, but if you like Chipotle, you’ll wonder where Freebirds has been all your life. And your kids will adore the fun, funky atmosphere, where the friendly staff greet you and stop by to see how you’re faring and encourage you to shape your burrito foil into a piece of impromptu art.And through their Freebirds World Works program, they support local charities and encourage volunteerism in the community.
Go hungry, leave happy! But beware the burrito coma… you might need a nap afterward. At least, don’t get the Monster for lunch if you have a 2:00 meeting, is all I’m suggesting.
