Groceries, Euro-Style
That’s the day that ALDI opens on Preston at Stonebrook, in the old Albertson’s location. ALDI is a discount supermarket, born in Germany and a household name throughout Europe. They are a no-frills store, with very little decorating, carrying mostly ALDI store brands.
The consumer experience in European markets is very different, which you will instantly feel when you go into ALDI. The checkout system will seem more like IKEA than a regular American grocery store.
You have to pay for shopping bags, which keeps costs down and also encourages you to bring your own reusable bags.
And you have to make a deposit to use a shopping cart! If you want to take a cart, you put a quarter into a machine and it will release a cart to you. When you return the cart, you get your quarter back. This is common practice throughout Europe and the UK, and it reduces labor cost and prevents cart damage in parking lots. But all of these cost saving measures are passed on to you, and ALDI prides itself on providing quality foods at a low price.
You can tour the new ALDI on March 15. There will be a public ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:00 pm, and then tours will be available until 6:00 pm. Or, return on Thursday 3/18 for the grand opening.
Just don’t forget to bring your own shopping bags.

I’ve been hearing more and more how grocery stores will be charging for bags or discounts when you bring in a recycle bag. That’s why we sell the Envirosax’s at Extravagant Necessities in designer colors. I’ve been using mine for a couple of weeks and it’s very convenient to roll them up and put them back in my purse since they are so light weight and I can load them up without worrying they will break. You can check them out at http://www.extravagantnecessities.com/EN_Featuring_Gifts.htm
So glad I saw this!
We have one opening right up the street and I really couldnt read the sign so we were baffled.
The heads up about the bags and carts are greatly appreciated. : D
Love ALDIS!!! Coming from the upper Midwest, we’re sooo glad that it’s finally opened up in Texas! Waiting for a few years! You can save like almost 50% on your groceries! Heads up also, they don’t take coupons. We lovvvvve Aldis!
